For over a year the Civil War has raged. Brother against brother, the powered community has been split down the center over the Super Human Registration Act. The Iron Man, Tony Stark, stands as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and leader of the government effort to enforce registration while his former friends and teammates lead the rebellion against him. The price of war has been high for both sides, sacrifices that no one, not even a masked avenger, could ever prepare to make have been demanded time and time again. None, however, were prepared for the most recent casualty of war: Steve Rogers is dead. Gunned down on the courthouse steps, Captain America is no more.
If only that had been the end of it.
The loss of their leader and symbol achieved what no other blow during the war had accomplished as the powered rebellion was at last driven to desperation. Upon hearing through their remaining intelligence that Reed Richards was to begin the construction of a new prison in a different universe, the remaining rebels made a frantic attempt at preventing this new gateway from opening. Gathering their remaining forces and what few allies were left to them, the rebellion attempted an attack on the facility in which the new gateway was being built. Reed Richards, however, had done his job too well. As the rebellion attempted to deactivate the machinery the console sparked, shuddering once before the gateway folded in on itself in a blinding flash of light. The exact reasons and science behind what happened next are unknown. The results, however, are terrifyingly clear: something in the divide between realities has been destroyed. Two planes have begun to merge.
At first, people were simply missing. Heroes, civilians, villains, it didn't seem to matter who you were or where you lived, when the rift formed people from all walks of life from every corner of the globe vanished into thin air. Many reappeared seconds later, sometimes on the other side of the world from where they had been only moments before. Others have yet to return. Even more disorienting is that of those who have returned, many seem changed from the persons they were only seconds before. With memories and abilities, or the lack of such, that had not been there before, these alternate versions of familiar faces have slowly but steadily replaced the missing.
Then the first newcomer appeared. Lost and disoriented, the first person from the other reality was quickly apprehended by S.H.I.E.L.D., hidden away for study and inquisition before the world could notice. However, it was only the beginning. Even as familiar faces return, a steady flow of these 'aliens' have appeared from the rift. Some claim to be heroes of their own dimension, others villains or simple civilians. There seems to be no reason or rhyme behind who is brought through the rift. The only thing that seems certain is this invasion shows no sign of stopping. No longer able to conceal this event, Tony Stark has announced a press conference to inform the near riotous masses of what has occurred and, perhaps more importantly in the mind of the mob, who is to blame.
Despite the horrors and the merging worlds around them, the Powered community remains fractured to its core as the war rages on. Scrambling to recover from the loss of allies, family and friends, and simply the people they are sworn to protect, both side of the War are in near chaos. As one of the first to return from the rift, Spider-Man has stepped forward as the leader of the rebellion in Captain America's place, while Tony Stark remains the leader and voice of the Registration movement. The Heroes for Hire have struggled to reestablish themselves as a distinct side in the war, while the villains, the group most accustomed to chaos, have used the near anarchy to regroup, shaking free of any previous allegiances or treaties to once more serve their own purposes. As more potential allies arrive everyday, the future of the world remains uncertain. Only time will tell whether there can ever be an end to the divide.
